We’ve talked before about common ways to reduce prescription costs such as using generics, preferred pharmacies, and 90-day supplies. But sometimes those traditional strategies aren’t enough.
Certain medications can still be expensive, even when you’re doing everything “right.” When that happens, it may be worth exploring some less conventional options. Here are several strategies that some people use to lower their out-of-pocket costs.
1. Use Discount Cards Like GoodRx
In some situations, paying cash with a discount card (such as GoodRx or similar programs) can actually cost less than your insurance copay. This is especially true for certain generic medications.
2. Ask About Splitting Higher-Dose Pills
With your doctor’s approval, pill splitting can sometimes reduce costs significantly.
A higher-dose tablet may cost the same as a lower-dose tablet. If your doctor prescribes the higher dose and instructs you to split it in half, you may effectively cut your medication cost in half.
3. Look Into Manufacturer Coupons or Rebate Programs
Many pharmaceutical companies offer savings programs for specific medications.
These may come in the form of coupons, or the medication may be mailed straight to your doorstep.
Eligibility varies, and some programs are not available if you have certain types of coverage, but it’s often worth checking especially for newer or brand-name medications. Your doctor’s office or the manufacturer’s website can usually provide details.
4. Ask Your Doctor for Help
Doctors frequently have access to tools that can help you lower the cost of your medications. Many times they have free samples, they may know information about patient assistance programs or charities, or they may be able to prescribe a lower-cost medication.
If cost is becoming a concern, bring it up directly. Physicians are used to having that conversation and can often suggest options to help you afford your medications.
5. Shop International Pharmacies
Some people explore overseas pharmacies for lower prices. Always speak with your doctor or pharmacist before considering this option to ensure you’re making a safe and informed decision.
Final Thoughts
Not every strategy will fit every situation, but when medication costs start to feel overwhelming, exploring these options can sometimes lead to meaningful savings.
